Features of glass doors for cast iron fireboxes

As mentioned above, ordinary glass will not be suitable for installing a glass door in the combustion chamber. It must have a high heat-resistant index.

The main task of such glass is to protect the house from fire, because a fireplace always represents increased fire safety. No matter how beautiful and romantic the process of lighting a fireplace and admiring an open flame is, there is always a risk of fire from the slightest spark.

Glass door of cast iron firebox

Installing such glass in a cast iron firebox requires certain knowledge and skills.

The main difference between heat-resistant glass for fireboxes and ordinary tempered glass is the casting expansion when heated. It does not develop cracks or chips during use. When purchasing glass for a cast iron firebox, pay attention to its maximum temperature. A material of 600 degrees will withstand a long period of time, but if it is exposed to a temperature of 750-800 degrees, then such glass will not withstand even several hours.

The performance properties of glass for fireboxes are affected by the type of fuel. Each type of fuel has its own technical characteristics and maximum combustion temperature. This must be taken into account before purchasing and installing.

Glass door of cast iron firebox

To extend the life of the firebox glass, you must adhere to basic safety measures:

  • Do not douse the flames with water in the fireplace. A sudden change in temperature can affect the technical characteristics of the glass.
  • Do not use harsh abrasive substances when cleaning the door and combustion chamber. The scratch itself will not violate the technical characteristics of the glass, but soot will accumulate faster at the point where it occurs, obscuring the view.
  • The service life is also affected by the correct installation of the door. If the draft in the fireplace is disrupted and the glass is constantly exposed to flame, then such a door will not last long, no matter how durable heat-resistant glass it is made of.

Attention! To ensure a beautiful aesthetic appearance of the glass door, you should monitor the quality of the firewood. If you use well-dried logs, the likelihood of soot formation will be minimized. If you throw foreign debris into the fireplace and use firewood with a high resin content, the door will be constantly covered with soot, ruining its beautiful appearance.

Advantages and disadvantages of a cast iron firebox

Now that we have decided on the type of fireplace design, we need to choose the material for the firebox. The firebox can be lined with fireclay bricks or made of cast iron or steel. Unlike steel structures, cast iron fireboxes are inexpensive and practical.

Cast iron fireplace in the country

The advantages of such cast iron fireboxes include:

  • fire resistance;
  • resistance to deformation;
  • ease of installation;
  • low price;
  • high performance;
  • good thermal conductivity;
  • excellent chamber sealing;
  • the ability to warm up a room of up to 300 square meters;
  • high heat storage capacity.

The special design of the cast iron closed firebox with glass allows you to accumulate thermal energy and release up to 70% into the room.

The outer part of such a firebox is covered with a special protective paint that can withstand high temperatures of up to 700-700 degrees Celsius. The front side is equipped with a glass door, which allows you to monitor the intensity of the flame, admire the hearth and add firewood.

Cast iron firebox

And the lower part of any combustion chamber requires the presence of an ash pan. This is the place where combustion products accumulate: resins, ash, ash. This part of the fireplace also performs another function. As you know, the combustion process cannot occur without oxygen. It is through the ash pan that air enters the cast iron combustion chamber.

The disadvantages of cast iron fireboxes with glass include:

  • small view of the viewing window;
  • the window quickly becomes covered with soot, which further reduces the view;
  • All products are produced in black, which does not allow you to vary the design of such a fireplace.

But the last point can be easily corrected if you install a decorative grille on the fireplace in the form of a bronze openwork mesh.

Base

Some models of freestanding gas fireplaces or electric fireplace kits do not require reinforcement of the floor covering. Due to their low weight, they can be installed in multi-storey buildings. It is necessary to first calculate the load per unit area and familiarize yourself with the technical characteristics of the floor of the house.

The cast-iron firebox will be built into a brick body, which means that the mass of our structure will require a reliable foundation. Ideally, the foundation for the fireplace is built simultaneously with the construction of the house, but few people have such foresight.

  • The first step is to dismantle the floor covering. The floors are raised to such an area that it is convenient to carry out work. It is necessary to dig a pit, the dimensions of which will be 30 cm larger than the fireplace body on each side, except adjacent to the wall.
  • The foundation is poured using reinforcing elements. If the soil is wet, it is recommended to use a stone rubble. Filling the foundation layer by layer, bring it to the floor level. After the mortar has hardened, the surface of the foundation is covered with waterproofing material and two rows of brick base for the future fireplace are laid. Its level must be brought to a strictly horizontal state.

Concrete screed construction work

Introduction

Before starting work, carefully read the instructions for assembling the fireplace insert. The stove manufacturer does not accept any responsibility for any damage that may occur as a result of failure to follow the instructions in their manual, which will void the warranty. Damage to components may occur if assembly procedures are not followed. The manual for professional installation and assembly of the firebox must contain all local rules and regulations regarding national and European standards. Keep this manual in a safe place.

Laying a fireplace with your own hands from bricks

First, soak the bricks in water (until the air bubbles come out). Since dry brick sucks moisture from the mortar, which leads to a decrease in its strength. Next, we begin to build our own fireplace.

Bookmark the first row. Stepping back 5 centimeters from the edge of the foundation, assemble the first tier dry. Then it needs to be leveled: by level, height and angles. Next, we lay all the stones on the mortar, controlling the horizontality with a level.

Then we build the walls of the fireplace

It is important to maintain a seam thickness of no more than 5 centimeters

Before laying the smoke collector, you need to lay out the structure without mortar (dry). This is the only way to accurately adjust all the angles. Before installation, fireplace doors are wrapped with asbestos where they touch the wall.

When building a chimney, add cement to the solution instead of clay.

Drying occurs within 14 days. Afterwards a test fire is carried out.

Choosing the location of the hearth and drawing up a design plan for installing a stove or fireplace

The choice of location for the stove or fireplace is always at the discretion of the user, but with one note: you should consult with a specialist to determine whether the ceilings and building structures are designed to support the weight of the selected fireplace. Consultation is also necessary regarding the technical feasibility of installing a chimney to the selected location of the future fireplace. It is in order for all installation processes to go as easily and quickly as possible, at the very beginning it is recommended to draw up a detailed technical plan - a work project, which will take into account all the nuances and important requirements. Following a competent engineering plan, installation specialists will be able to optimally install a home fireplace in compliance with all standards and requirements in a short time, without being distracted by third-party issues.

Installation process

Let's look at the basic rules that must be followed when laying and connecting a chimney:

  • the location of the chimney can be either horizontal or vertical. The direction can be varied along the entire length due to the fact that the channel is assembled from several elements. There are various fittings that allow you to form pipe bends, so the process is not particularly difficult. But it is still worthwhile to carry out the installation so that there are as few turns as possible, since combustion products can gradually accumulate in them;
  • Small stoves have a peculiarity - much less condensation forms in their chimneys than in devices of other sizes. The same applies to soot deposits. Therefore, for the chimney you can use a double-walled pipe made of stainless steel. A layer of basalt wool is laid as an insulator;
  • if the house already has a ready-made chimney duct, then the pipe is simply passed through it. It happens that the diameters do not match. To prevent the pipe from dangling, it is fixed using special adapters. If there is no ready-made chimney, then when arranging it it is necessary to take into account the diameter of the pipe that will be used;
  • Assembly of the chimney part of the structure first takes place in the room where the stove is installed. There is a pipe on its top or back. It is to it that the pipe must be attached, and a gate must be mounted above, with the help of which the draft will be regulated;
  • where the chimney pipe enters the wall or ceiling, it is necessary to install a metal plate. It should completely protect the thickness of the floor with its sides;
  • At the end of the pipe, which is located on the street, be sure to install a deflector - this is a special protective cover. In its absence, birds will begin to build nests at the chimney outlet, thereby provoking its clogging. In addition to feathered guests, leaves and other debris can get into the pipe. This should not be allowed, because if the chimney's permeability deteriorates, backdraft may occur and combustion products will flow into the house.

Gas outlet options

Smoke removal depends on the fireplace insert in combination with the flue storage system. The following versions exist: Fireplace insert with cast dome. Recommended for connection to an air storage system with an internal diameter of 180 mm. Fireplace inserts with heat exchanger. Recommended for direct connection to pipes with an internal diameter of 200 mm. Fireplace insert with 45° heat exchanger. Recommended for direct connection to pipes with an internal diameter of 200 mm. Fireplace insert with a heat exchanger with a vertical outlet. Recommended for connection to a storage air duct system or for direct connection to a chimney. Fireplace insert for connecting accumulative rings. Recommended for connection to storage rings with an outer diameter of 440 mm. Fireplace insert with cast iron smoke collector. Recommended for direct connection to pipes with an internal diameter of 200 mm. The fireplace insert is right-handed. Recommended for lateral connections with pipes with an internal diameter of 200 mm. The fireplace insert is left-handed. Recommended for lateral connections with pipes with an internal diameter of 200 mm.

For beauty in the home

If there is no need to heat your home, you just want to decorate it with an original stove, you can choose a decorative fireplace for this purpose. It does not require either a chimney or a complex internal structure; in fact, it is simply a portal inside which an artistic composition or an electrical imitation of smoldering coals is installed. At the same time, it’s easy to make a portal with your own hands, even for those who have never in their life thought about how to build a fireplace.

You can install it directly on the floor, without any foundation; the frame is made of wood or metal profiles, and covered with plasterboard on top.

A corner decorative stove will fit even in a small room, decorating it and creating an additional surface - a mantelpiece. An antique-style living room will greatly benefit from such decoration. An openwork fireplace grate will complement the composition.

You can draw fireplace designs yourself or enlist the help of specialists. This is what a project for a decorative stove for home decoration looks like.

Functional purpose of individual parts

Fuel is loaded into the firebox and ignited. The combustion activity and intensity of heat release are directly related to the damper - with a larger opening, maximum air enters the firebox and the wood burns better. If the design involves an open firebox, the intensity of the fire does not need to be adjusted.

To regulate the air supply you need a grate. An important point is the timely removal of ash, which collects through the grate into the ash pan. Usually it is raked out or shaken out, depending on the presence of a built-in or retractable system.

The fireplace chimney removes the accumulated combustion products to the street. To prevent gases from spreading inside the house, the chimney is often equipped with forced draft force. It is a fan. For the construction of a chimney, it is allowed to use only heat-resistant bases: brick, ceramics, heat-resistant steel.

Dimensions: instructions for calculation

You can determine the size of the fireplace using the following calculations.

Note: The parameters of the firebox depend on the size of the room: the area of the firebox hole corresponds to 2% of the area of the room. For example, for a room of 30 m2, the area of the combustion opening will be 0.6 m2 - that’s 6000 cm2.

The standard ratio of the dimensions of the firebox height to its width is 2:3. In our case, it is 95 cm by 62 cm (95*62=5952, almost 6000 cm2).

Next we look for the size of the hole depth. Traditionally it is equal to 2/3 of the height. In our example, the best depth would be 620/3*2=413 mm. Why exactly so much? At greater depths, heat will fly out into the chimney without heating the room. If it is less, smoke will begin to enter the room.

The size of the fireplace also depends on the material chosen. Stone fireplaces look bulky and massive; they are suitable for a spacious home. Metal finished with tiles or plaster will look much more compact with the same firebox parameters. The size of the portal also matters.

Convection zone

If heated air is not used, there must be a gap of at least 6 cm between the firebox and the insulation layer (4, 15) for the rear and side areas. The convection zone must be isolated from all walls, with the exception of the walls that form the heat exchanger. The walls, floor and ceiling of the convection zone must be clean and abrasion-resistant. All convection pipes must be made of non-combustible materials. When laying the corrugation for supplying hot air: the corrugation must be securely connected to the hot air flange on the inlet grid. Operation of the air grid (hypocaust): heated air circulates in a closed space. Heat from the convective zone is transferred into the room through heat exchange zones. The heat load in the hypocaust convection zone is higher than that of conventional ventilation grilles.

Stage 3. Construction of the pedestal

The construction of the fireplace begins with the manufacture of a pedestal for the portal. It is advisable to use a piece of tabletop for this, cut to fit the size of the device.

It is recommended to use an MDF tabletop with a laminated protective coating. This material is resistant to moisture and high temperatures. The modern color range is quite wide, which allows you to choose a tabletop to suit every taste. In short, no difficulties should arise at this stage.

Pedestal for fireplacePedestal for fireplace

If you plan to install a wall-mounted fireplace, then a rectangular tabletop is cut out (a jigsaw is used for this), and if it is a corner one, then a pentagonal one.

The pedestal needs to be raised by placing it on a slight elevation. Such an elevation can be a frame made of a metal profile 5x5 cm or 5x4 cm. At the end, the pedestal is covered with a plastic plinth, the color is similar to the color of the tabletop.
