The principle of operation of infrared heating is that the heater transmits radiant thermal energy in the infrared range (by analogy with the thermal energy of the Sun) to all surrounding elements of the interior, as well as the floor and walls, and they, in turn, when heated, conduct a wide-area heat exchange with air.

How to heat at least a small room or heat/cook food in the absence of such an achievement of civilization as electricity? The review contains advice and instructions from people who have already encountered such a pressing problem.
In a situation where the room is cold, the heating is not working and the electric heater either cannot be turned on, or not in the right way - there is no light, for example - anyone can find themselves. And Lugansk residents are already familiar with the ban on using electric heaters due to the danger of overloading power lines, which could lead to a complete shutdown of the city from electricity, as the Lugansk City Council warns about almost daily.
And if in the summer, in the absence of light, the only question is how to prepare food, then with the onset of cold weather, the problem of heating the room becomes no less acute.
But, as they say, the need for invention is cunning. And Luhansk residents are not the only ones who are faced with the problem of heating a room in the absence of basic amenities of civilization. Below we have collected popular and tried-and-true methods for heating a small (!) room, heating food and improvised heating pads from scrap materials.

Electricity is a worthy replacement for gas due to its absence
Economical, efficient heating of a private home or cottage without gas should be more focused on maintaining familiar living conditions. The level of comfort determines the choice of an alternative heating method, and today’s technology provides ample room for maneuver. The availability of electricity will allow you to achieve gas savings in the cold season. It is not without reason that many owners of country houses and country cottages, due to the lack of technical capabilities for connecting to the gas main, prefer electric heating systems.
Compared to other heating devices, electric heating devices have almost 100% efficiency. An electric boiler is easy to maintain and inexpensive. In this case, there is no need for exhaust hood and chimney equipment.
Electricity remains by far the most affordable alternative to gas heating when considering efficiency and ease of maintenance.
In addition to installing an electric boiler for a water heating system in a house, convectors, heat guns and infrared emitters are actively used to heat small residential buildings. The installation of heated floors in a private home is becoming a fashionable phenomenon today. The technology is quite new, however, it has already proven its effectiveness. The variety of heat sources offered gives you the opportunity to make a choice as to how best to heat your home.
In the event that a heated floor is your main source of heating residential premises, the power of the equipment should be 150-180 W per m2 of living space. Warm floors must have an area of at least 70-80% of the total area of the building itself. Otherwise, the expected heating effect will be negligible.
When heating a private home using other methods, you can achieve even higher economic indicators. Without gas, an economical and uninterrupted source of thermal energy in your area can be obtained using a heat pump. The operating principle of the equipment is based on the difference in temperature, deep in the soil and on the surface. With the help of a heat pump, which really costs a lot of money, you can provide yourself with an almost eternal source of heat in a country house. The effectiveness of this system is confirmed by simple calculations. An indicator of the successful operation of a heat pump is the heat conversion coefficient (COR).
Eg. When a heat pump consumes 1 kW of electricity necessary to ensure the operation of the entire system (Htn), the heat conversion coefficient (COP) is 3.0, which means:
Rtn x COP = 3 kW Rp energy output. The savings and efficiency of this heating method are more than obvious.
There is no clear answer to the question whether it is more profitable to heat a private house with gas or other types of fuel. In each individual case, the presence of a variety of factors plays a role, not least of which are the economic and technical capabilities of the consumer.
Instead of gas for heating, you can use almost any fuel. Another thing is how well you can fully heat your own home in cold weather and create comfortable living conditions for yourself. When faced with a situation like this, the choice is yours. How to save money and make your heating costs optimal depends on you, on your attitude to the very fact of saving energy and technical capabilities.

Comparative analysis based on other criteria
In addition to the questions: the cheaper it is to heat a house, fuel consumption and efficiency, various heat generation options can be compared according to other parameters:
- From an environmental point of view, it is better to use equipment that runs on electricity. Then there is a gas boiler and combined gas-electricity systems.
- Electric convectors and infrared emitters have advantages in terms of complexity and cost of maintenance. The most demanding in terms of this parameter will be solid fuel systems, which require daily cleaning and loading.
- In terms of installation complexity, hybrid systems rank first, for example, solar collectors - gas boiler. The easiest to install is electrical equipment, followed by solid fuel boilers. Gas devices are installed, tested, and serviced only by special organizations and require a large number of permits.
- According to safety criteria, any heating system can lead to unpleasant consequences if used incorrectly. Possible electric shocks, fires, and gas explosions.
Nuances of operation
Heating systems have their own operating characteristics depending on the quality of installation and type of equipment.
Systems of the same type work differently because:
- fuel of a different quality is used;
- coolant parameters differ;
- a local zone of low pressure has formed in the expansion tank;
- air is sucked into the circuit due to a leak;
- air diffusion occurs through the surface of pipes made of plastic;
- During the installation of the pipeline, plugs were allowed to form, for example, when soldering pipes.
About fuel storage
To prepare a supply of firewood for the entire season, you will need a room protected from moisture. Coal, briquettes and pellets also require special storage conditions.
To contain liquid fuels, you will need a plastic or metal container, which should not be in the basement.
Equipment service
Primary and additional heating in a cottage or private house require periodic inspection, repair and replacement of components. The following signs indicate the need for work:
- Coolant is leaking from radiators and pipes;
- seething or noise is heard in the system;
- uneven heating in different rooms and floors;
- The system functions worse than at startup.
Possible causes of problems:
- design errors;
- the tightness of the connections is broken;
- Radiators are installed incorrectly;
- air pockets interfere with coolant circulation;
- equipment was installed in bad faith;
- due to incorrect connections, the system was unbalanced;
- use of low-quality components.
Solid fuel boilers and stoves
How to heat a house inexpensively? The most accessible and initially cheapest option for heating a country house today is the use of ordinary firewood. This is an old and proven safe type of fuel. But if in a simple small village house firewood and a small stove are enough for people, then for a modern country house this will not be enough. And here special boilers that run on solid fuel will come to the rescue.
As a rule, firewood produces a large amount of heat. Therefore, using them you can also heat the room, cook food and heat water if necessary. If we are talking about heating a large house with several rooms, then one boiler or stove will not be enough. Here special batteries or radiators will come to the rescue, which will distribute heat throughout all rooms from the main source installed in a certain place. Heat will circulate throughout the heating system. If desired, you can make such a system adjustable, which will allow you to heat some rooms and leave others cold.
Today, there are 3 main types of solid fuel boilers. These are pyrolysis units, classic devices and gas generator boilers. Each model has both its undeniable advantages and disadvantages. Classic installations are considered the most inexpensive and in demand. They are not that expensive, they work almost uninterruptedly and without serious breakdowns.
But still, the cheapest thing for a country house would be to acquire a regular wood-burning stove. Such economical heating will help solve several problems at once. You can cook food and heat water on it. At the same time, the stove will perfectly warm the air in the room. And in regions with a particularly harsh climate, such a stove is convenient because you can also sleep on it.
Wood stove in a private house
You can either build a stove in your home yourself, or invite a specialist to assemble it according to a finished project. It all depends on the financial resources of the homeowner. If you approach this issue wisely, you can make a wood-burning stove that will not only be highly functional, but will also fit perfectly into the interior. An example of such an installation is shown in the photo.
But when choosing this heating option, some disadvantages should be taken into account. So, you will have to constantly load firewood into the oven. If coal is used, then this can be done a little less often. When using the stove, you will need to strictly monitor compliance with safety rules. Another significant disadvantage for many homeowners is that when using the stove you will need to constantly remove debris and ash. And this can only be done mechanically. Therefore, you will have to give up carpets in a room with a stove in advance.
How to heat a house without using electricity and gas has now become clear. Is it cheaper to do this? Such a question cannot be answered immediately. Here a lot will depend on related factors. But still, now there are many options for alternative heating. Therefore, you can always find the most suitable solution for yourself.
Heaters
Depending on the operating principle and heat source, heaters are divided into oil, infrared, gas, etc.
Oil heater
What is an oil heater? This is the reservoir in which the heating element is located. Oil is also poured in there. Oil was not chosen as a coolant by chance: it takes a long time to heat up, but then, after maximum heating, it is able to maintain a high temperature for a long time.
This device has other advantages:
- relatively low price;
- mobility (unlike a battery, the heater can be moved to any place in the room or country house);
- there are no foreign odors or noise during its operation;
- When heating, it does not dry out the air in the room.
The disadvantages include the following:
- the oil heats up very slowly, so you will have to wait a long time for the air in the room to warm up. Oil heaters equipped with a fan do not have this drawback, although they are more expensive;
- Due to the massive body and the oil poured into the tank, these devices are quite heavy. If you have a two-story cottage, then when moving the device from one floor to another this can turn into a big problem;
- Due to the high heating temperature of the housing, there is a risk of burns. This is especially important in families with children;
- considerable cost of energy consumption during prolonged heating of the heater.
Infrared heater
An infrared heater has a completely different operating principle. The temperature rise there occurs due to the action of infrared rays (hence the name). They act like the sun's rays: they pass freely through the air without heating it. When some “obstacle” (person, animal, furniture, etc.) is encountered along the way, infrared rays are absorbed by it, and at the same time the temperature of this object or living creature rises. Thus, infrared heaters do not warm the air, but us and all objects that are in their zone of action. And now we give this heat to the air, increasing its temperature.
Infrared heaters can be installed on any surface: floor, wall or ceiling. They have tip-over protection, which immediately turns off the device after a fall. They also have other advantages:
- these devices do not waste time on prolonged warming up, like oil devices, but begin to give off heat immediately after switching on;
- they operate silently, do not create odor and do not burn oxygen in the room;
- Many models have sensors that prevent the device from overheating and maintain the temperature at the level desired by the owner.
Infrared heaters are not without their disadvantages:
- quite high price compared to oil heaters;
- limited distance between the device and an object/person, beyond which the effect of the device is no longer felt;
- If you stay in the area of infrared rays for a long time, your health may deteriorate: headache, dry skin and eyes.
Convectors: electric and gas
A slightly different type of heating device, which is often used to heat country houses during the cold season, are convectors. The principle of their operation is based on the property of cold air to sink down, displacing warm air from there. The latter rises up, cools there and falls down again. This is how natural air circulation occurs - convection. She gave the device its name – convector.
An electric convector consists of a housing, in the upper and lower parts of which there are air intake openings. There is a heating element located inside the housing. Cold air enters the housing from below and flows around the heating element. At this time, its temperature rises, and a hot air flow comes out of the case through the upper holes, which immediately rises up to the ceiling. There it gives off its heat to the surrounding space, cools and sinks down again. This heats up the room.
Advantages of convectors:
- warms up the air in the room very quickly;
- unlike heaters, the body of convectors hardly heats up, so it is impossible to get burned on it;
- fairly low noise level;
- The temperature sensor helps control the heat level in the room and turns off the device when the desired temperature is reached. Thanks to this, energy savings occur.
There is nothing ideal in the world, so convectors also have disadvantages:
- while the convector is operating, the humidity level decreases, the air becomes very dry;
- high electricity consumption;
- Without a working convector, the air cools very quickly, so the device must be turned on constantly.
Heating with solid fuel
The closest alternative to gas in domestic realities can be called solid fuel: firewood, peat, coal or briquettes. In terms of cost, solid fuel heating boilers are somewhat cheaper than gas boilers; they do not require such strict control of safety systems, but that is where their advantages end.
Basically, wood-burning boilers or fireplaces are seriously considered as the main method of heating a home in cases where, over the next few decades, the slightly higher cost of fuel does not compare with the cost of connecting to the gas supply system. Such heating equipment is not without its drawbacks: the boiler needs to be constantly replenished with fuel, combustion produces a significant amount of soot and ash, and there are difficulties with adjusting power.
We like comfort, you can't argue with that. But there are also positive changes in the development of solid fuel heating equipment designed to improve ease of use. The simplest solution for civil residential buildings can be called long-burning boilers: they are loaded at intervals of one to several days, and the combustion intensity is approximately the same both at the beginning and at the end of the cycle. Modern solid fuel boilers, equipped with automatic devices, are able to maintain the coolant temperature with an accuracy of 2-3 °C by regulating the air supply necessary to maintain combustion.
The most technologically advanced in this regard are heating units that are specifically designed for the use of a special type of fuel - briquettes and pellets. In the latter case, it is possible to install a bunker, as well as automatic fuel supply and ash removal mechanisms. If such equipment is available, the home owner will have to visit the boiler room quite rarely, from 3-4 days to several weeks, it all depends on the storage capacity. Problems with the formation of soot and tar are also eliminated: the prepared fuel has extremely low humidity and does not cause condensation of moisture from the exhaust gases.
Comparison
Operating costs
Here's how our participants line up when assessing their cost-effectiveness:
- The undisputed leader is solar heat. Collectors convert it into heating coolant completely free of charge. Electricity is consumed only by circulation pumps;

- In second place is a solid fuel boiler that runs on wood. Yes, yes, I am aware that we are in the 21st century. These are Russian realities: in the absence of main gas and with short daylight hours, firewood is still more economical than all other heat sources and provides a cost per kilowatt-hour of 0.9 - 1.1 rubles;
- Third place is shared by pellets and coal. Depending on local energy prices, a kilowatt-hour of heat obtained by burning them will cost 1.4-1.6 rubles;
- Liquefied gas from a gas tank provides a kilowatt-hour cost of 2.3 rubles;
- The use of cylinders increases it to 2.8 - 3 rubles;
The gas cylinder station will allow you not to change the cylinder every day.
- Liquid fuel boilers running on diesel fuel produce heat with an average cost of about 3.2 rubles/kWh;
- The obvious outsiders are electric boilers. The price of a kilowatt-hour of heat obtained by heating water with a heating element or any other direct heating device is equal to the cost of a kilowatt-hour of electricity and, at current rates, is approximately 4 rubles.
Induction electric boiler. Its undoubted advantage is reliability. But in terms of efficiency, it is no different from a device with heating elements.
Installation costs
How much will it cost to install heating in a country house or country house?
In order not to cause confusion due to the variation in the parameters of the heating system, I will compare the average cost of heat sources of the same rated power - 15 kW.
Gas boiler - from 25 thousand rubles;
- Pellet boiler - from 110,000;
- Electric boiler - from 7000;
- Solid fuel boiler - 20,000;
- Liquid fuel (diesel or exhaust) - from 30,000;
- Solar collectors with a total power of 45 kW (three times the power reserve compensates for downtime in the dark) - from 700,000 rubles.
Downtime at night has to be compensated for by the number of collectors.
Obviously, only wood and coal provide a reasonable balance between the cost of a kilowatt-hour of heat and the heating equipment itself. A good alternative to them - used oil - cannot participate on equal terms in our competition due to the inaccessibility of this energy carrier.
Free solar heat turns out to be prohibitively expensive at the installation stage: the cost of a thermal energy accumulator will be added to the exorbitant costs of the collectors themselves.

Ease of use
Laziness, as you know, is the engine of progress. You want to heat your home not only cheaply, but also with minimal expenditure of time and effort.
What are the different heating options with autonomy?
- Electric boilers are in the lead. They work indefinitely and do not require any maintenance at all. The coolant temperature can be adjusted automatically using a remote electronic thermostat. Electrical equipment allows you to program daily and weekly cycles (for example, reduce the temperature while you are away);

- A gas boiler with a gas tank provides autonomy for several months, or even an entire season. It differs unfavorably from an electric boiler in the need to remove combustion products, so the location of the device is tied to the ventilation, chimney or external walls of a private house;
- The autonomy of a liquid fuel device is limited only by the volume of the fuel tank;
Diesel boiler room.
- The use of several parallel-connected cylinders reduces the autonomy of heating equipment by up to a week;
- A pellet boiler can work approximately the same amount of time on one load;
- A solid fuel boiler needs to be topped up every few hours and the ash pan needs to be periodically cleaned. This period can be increased by limiting the thermal power with a covered air damper, but in this case, incomplete combustion of the fuel will reduce the efficiency of the device and, accordingly, increase the owner’s heating costs.
What's the result? But in the end, comrades, we have to choose between the limited autonomy of a pellet boiler with its rather high cost, the continuous kindling of a solid fuel appliance and the sky-high cost of thermal energy from an electric boiler.
The main problem with solid fuel heating is frequent lighting.
Metal furnaces
Once upon a time they were called potbelly stoves. This name dates back to the distant times of the civil war and subsequent devastation, when the simplest joys of life were associated with great wealth.
Much has changed since then, but an iron stove is still called a potbelly stove. They look different now. Many of them are equipped with fireproof glass windows, but their essence has not changed - they heat up quickly and cool down just as quickly.
Maybe that’s why this stove was called a potbelly stove, because maintaining a constantly high temperature requires a lot of wood, bourgeois style.
Folk fantasy
In the Siberian taiga huts, where it is possible to install a cast-iron stove, but it is difficult to deliver bricks, the potbelly stove is lined on three sides with large stones, rolled in by the river. It turns out beautiful and functional - the stones heat up and slowly release heat to the air.
This technique is quite applicable in the conditions of a country house - when the house is built, but the heating is not yet ready. To some extent, stones perform fire-fighting functions, absorbing random sparks and excess heat. Stone structures can serve as a reason for the designer’s flights of fancy.
The efficiency of a metal stove will increase if you equip it with a coil for heating water and connect heating batteries to it.
Heater + camping stove for heating food from cans - alcohol lamp
The design is known abroad as an alcohol stove, or in Russian - an alcohol lamp. The Swedish army has even adopted it.
Alcohol is used because it does not smoke when burned. This means the dishes remain clean and no soot or smoke floats in the air. The design is as simple as 3 kopecks and can be repeated in a few minutes from any available materials. For example, a beer can, coffee can or condensed milk can be used as a donor for the stove.
More specifically: you need a small iron container with an iron lid, or you will have to cover it with something.
The author used a can of Korenovsky condensed milk - it is convenient because there is an almost airtight lid on top, but even without it everything will work if there is a flat-bottomed dish on top.
So: we take a jar, a ruler, a strip of checkered leaves and a marker or any drawing or scratching object.
1. Mark a stripe on the can, moving one third from the top. The easiest way to do this is by spinning the jar while holding the marker in one position.
2. We wrap a strip of paper around the edge of the mark and fasten it with a piece of tape or glue.
3. We begin to drill, pierce with an awl or cut holes with a knife along the marked strip. In this case, I made a series of holes with a diameter of 0.8 mm through 10 mm and through 5 mm - decide for yourself which option is better for you. You can see how they burn below. A small hole diameter for proper combustion is better than a large one, but you can make 3-5 holes a centimeter each. The uniformity of the holes is a purely aesthetic point in order to get a beautiful crown of flame like from a regular gas stove. All!
Well, not quite of course, now we’re learning how to light it up. You need to add alcohol and close the lid, 50 ml burns for 15 minutes or more. Place on a non-flammable surface and shake lightly so that the alcohol flows a little onto the outside of the jar through the holes. We light the alcohol outside and wait until it burns out. We repeat the procedure until we get a self-sustaining flame from improvised nozzles around the can. Usually it is enough to repeat 2-3 times and everything starts working on its own.
Its operating principle is simple: the flame heats the walls of the jar, the heat is transferred down the walls to the alcohol, the alcohol boils near the walls and the pressure inside increases, the alcohol vapor comes out under pressure through the holes and mixes with air and burns beautifully. Now we put a pot, a kettle, a mug on top, or we just warm ourselves around the stove - it gives a lot of heat and burns for a long time.
For greater heat transfer, you can place a homemade alcohol lamp in a larger iron container, which would heat up and release heat:
The smaller the number of holes, the harder it is to light, but the less fuel consumption and less heat from it. A liter of water boils in less than 10 minutes. It is resistant to wind, extinguish by covering, add as much fuel as needed, otherwise you will have to wait for it to burn out or pour the hot alcohol back into the container, which is not safe.
Similar options “for one mug” from a tin can with a filler hole that is closed with a coin and from an aerosol can:
conclusions
They are disappointing. A cheaper alternative to gas heating that will work in any climate is a myth. At current gas prices, it remains the most profitable source of heat. But his prospects, alas, are gloomy: gas prices will quickly rise, and the price ratio may yet change towards electricity.

Today, natural gas is the most popular and affordable type of fuel for domestic needs and heating. However, fossil reserves are not unlimited, the cost of gas is rising, and connecting to the main line is often impossible or insanely expensive. This forces us to look for other, less conventional ways to heat our homes.
How to save energy?
Follow these tips to make electric heating in a private home more economical:
- use multi-tariff electricity metering, since at night the tariff is much lower than during the day;
- use non-electric heat sources during business hours;
- install thermostats in the rooms;
- give preference to underfloor heating systems;
- traditional advice: try to insulate the house or the external wall of the apartment as much as possible.
There is no need to neglect automation tools that can help reduce the temperature in unused rooms. And in general, you should not reject any means that will help you reduce energy costs.
Create a project for an optimal electric heating system. For example, a small one-room apartment can be heated by an electric boiler (provided that the heat loss is quite small). But in a house with a large number of rooms, it may no longer cope with the task fully.
In this situation, the best option would be to install a convector system with thermostats that will control the climate in each room. Infrared panels are the optimal solution for outbuildings where there is no need to maintain a constant temperature.
Idea 1 Compact model for local heating
The simplest way to make an electric heater is this one. To get started, prepare the following materials:
- 2 identical rectangular glasses, each with an area of about 25 cm2 (for example, dimensions 4*6 cm);
- a piece of aluminum foil, the width of which is no greater than the width of the glass;
- cable for connecting an electric heater (copper, two-wire, with plug);
- paraffin candle;
- epoxy adhesive;
- sharp scissors;
- pliers;
- wooden block;
- sealant;
- several ear sticks;
- clean cloth.
As you can see, the materials for assembling a homemade electric heater are not at all scarce, and most importantly, everything can be at hand. So, you can make a small electric heater with your own hands using the following step-by-step instructions:
- Wipe the glass thoroughly with a cloth to remove dirt and dust.
- Using pliers, carefully grab the glass by the edge and burn one side with a candle. The soot should evenly cover the entire surface. Similarly, you need to burn one of the sides of the second glass. In order for carbon deposits to settle on the surface better, it is recommended to cool the glass before assembling the electric heater.
- After the glass pieces have cooled, carefully use ear sticks to clean the edges no more than 5 mm around the entire perimeter.
- Cut two strips of foil, the width exactly corresponding to the width of the smoked area on the glass.
- Apply glue to the glass over the entire burned surface (it is conductive).
- Place the pieces of foil as shown in the photo below. Then apply glue to the other half and connect them.
- Then seal all joints.
