The safest heaters

Heating appliances can be divided into several types, depending on the fuel on which they operate:

  • Gas - operate on natural gas or propane. They can be convector and infrared.
  • Electric – heat guns and fans, infrared heaters, convectors. Heat is supplied to the room by convection or by emitting infrared waves, which heat surrounding objects, depending on the type of device.
  • Solid fuel and liquid fuel - the fuel is coal, peat, firewood, etc. The operating principle of which is based on the combustion of fuel inside the heater and the generation of heat in this process.

Electric heaters are the safest for a wooden house, since they are equipped with overheating protection and other systems.
The main disadvantage of gas heaters is installation problems; heaters can only be used in areas where gas is installed. Additionally, installation permission is required, since gas heaters are dangerous. There is a high probability of gas leakage during operation. Heating devices operating on solid or liquid fuels are also very effectively used to maintain heat in the house. Their main advantage is the speed with which they perform their main task. Within a few minutes the house becomes much warmer, even if the thermometer outside the window shows a significant minus. Fuel heaters have a fairly high efficiency and can operate on one load of fuel for a long time. But at the same time, these types of heaters are not very convenient to use. You need to monitor the level of fuel, purchase it, they form combustion products, require frequent cleaning and constant care, a place to store fuel, emit an odor and make noise during operation. In addition, such devices are quite expensive, and their operation also requires significant expenses. In addition, they are not so safe and can cause a fire or burn.

Due to these features, electric heaters have become widespread. You do not need to obtain special permits to install them, and they are much safer.

The best electric convectors for areas up to 25 sq.m.

For rooms up to 25 square meters, a device with a power of 1500 - 2500 W is required. In such rooms, both wall and floor models are used. They can heat the air in large rooms in a short time, but at the same time they consume quite a lot of electricity and can dry out the air.

What is the difference between heating a private house with electric convectors?

It is better and more economical to use convectors than an electric boiler in the following cases:

  • heated area of a private house is less than 80-90 m2;
  • it is planned to purchase expensive models with precise electronic control and the ability to combine devices through a common thermostat or application;
  • temporary residence in a house when the lower operating costs of an electric boiler do not pay for the high cost of purchasing and installing the entire system.

The most common misconception is that “convectors are more economical than an electric boiler, because during their operation, thermal energy is immediately transferred to the room (convector → air), while the thermal energy generated by an electric boiler goes through the cycle electric boiler → coolant → CO distribution → radiators → air.”

This is true, but it is worth taking into account the previously described factors: more stable temperature maintenance by the electric boiler, the presence of stepwise or even smooth power adjustment, the ability to work based on data from an external thermostat - all this has a much greater impact on efficiency, the difference is confirmed by practice and reviews from owners.

The exception is cases when budget electric boilers with stepwise power adjustment without external control and good convectors in the high price segment (from 8-9 thousand rubles) are compared.

Proper placement and connection of the convector to the electrical network of the country house.

Types of thermostats

Maintaining the required temperature is carried out using a thermostat, which is equipped with all modern convector models. This function allows for optimal operation of the device and energy consumption. The user independently sets the appropriate temperature. As a rule, there are several operating modes: “economical”, “comfort”, “automatic”.

Electronic controllers are multifunctional and allow you to set and save individual operating settings, up to hourly temperature changes. The electronic error is minimal, but such thermostats are sensitive to voltage drops. If there are problems with the electrical wiring, which is common in the private or country sector, you should pay attention to the second type of thermostat regulators.

Mechanical thermostats are less accurate, have narrow functionality, but are much more affordable. In addition, they are more resistant to high humidity than electronic ones. Another advantage of “mechanics” is that control is carried out manually. In rare cases, electronics can “go astray or freeze,” completely shutting down the device.

Collector connection diagram

Manifold cabinet

  • The manifold cabinet must be installed in a place that is convenient for access, and at the same time, so that it does not interfere. You need to connect the water supply and return pipes to it, but before that you need to install shut-off valves on the collector.
  • To make it easier to control temperature and pressure, a thermometer and pressure gauge are often placed next to the valves.
  • To connect the pipes supplied to the manifold, compression fittings are used, which are secured with a threaded connection.
  • If it is necessary to connect different pipe diameters, universal fittings or adapters are used.

The simplest connection diagram looks like this: one collector connects all the water supply pipes, and the second is the return pipe. The collectors themselves are connected to pipes with coolant.

A simple connection diagram via collectors for 5 circuits

This option is not very good, since it will be almost impossible to regulate the temperature of the water supply from the boiler. At most, it will be possible to close the shut-off valve, but this is not a solution to the problem. Moreover, many floor coverings cannot be heated above 30 degrees; temperature regulation must be provided.

  • A full-fledged version of the circuit will have additional elements: a pump-mixing unit or a three-way mixer, a water drain tap, an air vent and a circular pump.
  • Instead of shut-off taps, you can install thermostatic mixers. By changing the volume of the rod with paraffin inside it, it sets the throughput of the valve without sudden jumps.
  • A pumping and mixing unit is required to add cooled liquid to the supply to reduce the overall temperature of the water so that it does not exceed permissible limits.

Complete collectors

Note! The mixing pump must be installed between the supply manifold and the supply pipe. Its third output goes to the removal of water from the outlet collector

This way, the pump will be able to draw cold water and mix it into the supply.

Many homeowners want to replace a conventional heating system with water heated floors or combine it with radiators. It is especially relevant for the bathroom and children's room. The advantages of the correct installation of a water heated floor are obvious: uniform heating of the space, efficiency, and the ability to heat large areas.

Such floors are connected to a gas or electric boiler and, heating themselves, release heat to the room due to the circulation of hot water under them. Multi-storey buildings for the most part are not suitable for their construction, unlike new buildings and private houses. In any case, before connecting to the water heated floor heating system on your own, ask your management company about the possibility or impermissibility of installing it.

Features and types of connection diagrams

The fundamental difference between the system is the temperature of the circulating water, which is 33-38 °C, and for radiators it reaches 80. Considering the finish coating and the method of heat distribution, you must follow the rules:

  • Any scheme for connecting a heated floor circuit to a centralized heating system involves attaching it to the side outlets of the collector using fittings.
  • The screed under the finishing coating should be thin and reinforced with a reinforced mesh laid on top of the pipes.
  • The insulation under the laminate significantly reduces heat transfer, so it is not used.
  • When installing under porcelain stoneware or ceramics, the screed should have a height of 3-5 cm, the pitch between the pipes should be 10-15.
  • After the first power-up, it may take up to 2 days for the system to fully warm up.

Knowing the features and rules of a water heated floor, you can connect it yourself, all that remains is to decide on the option for laying the pipes:

1. Snake is the simplest type of installation for small areas. The pipe is hotter at the beginning than at the end, but in small areas the temperature spread is very low.

2. Double snake – heat is distributed more evenly, suitable for a large room.

3. Snail - water conduits are laid in a spiral. Uniform heat transfer is ensured by forward and return pipes located in parallel. Suitable for rooms with increased heat requirements. The contours do not have a sharp bend and make fewer turns, which allows the installation of more rigid pipes with a minimum distance between lines.

Determining the number of aluminum battery sections

It is not easy to recalculate the parameters of a heating device for specific conditions. The thermal power formula and calculation algorithm used by design engineers are too complex for ordinary homeowners who are ignorant of heating engineering.

We suggest calculating the number of sections of heating radiators using a more accessible method that gives a minimum error:

  1. Collect the initial data listed in the first section of this publication - find out the amount of heat required for heating, the temperature of the air and coolant.
  2. Calculate the actual temperature difference DT using the above formula.
  3. When choosing a specific type of battery, open the technical data sheet and find the heat transfer rate of 1 section at DT = 70 degrees.
  4. Below is a table of ready-made conversion factors for the heating power of radiator sections. Find the indicator corresponding to the real DT and multiply it by the value of the rated heat transfer - get the power of 1 fin under your operating conditions.

Knowing the real heat flow, it is not difficult to find out the number of battery fins required to heat the room. Divide the required amount of heat by the output of 1 section. For clarity, here is an example calculation:

  1. Let's take a corner room with two translucent structures (windows) with an area of 15.75 m², ceiling height - 280 cm (shown in a fragment of the drawing). Specific heat consumption for heating is 130 W/m², the total requirement will be 130 x 15.75 = 2048 W.
  2. We found out the magnitude of the thermal pressure in the previous section, DT = 43 °C.
  3. We select low aluminum radiators GLOBAL VOX 350 (center distance - 350 mm). According to the product documentation, the heat output of 1 fin is 145 W (DT = 70 °C).
  4. We find in the table the coefficient corresponding to DT = 43 °C, K = 0.53.
  5. We multiply the nameplate power by the coefficient and find the real output of 1 section: 0.53 x 145 = 76.85 W.
  6. We calculate the number of aluminum fins per room: 2048 / 76.85 ≈ 26.65, round up and get 27 pieces.

All that remains is to distribute the sections throughout the room. If the window sizes are the same, we divide 28 in half and place a radiator with 14 fins under each opening. Otherwise, the number of battery sections is selected in proportion to the width of the windows (approximately possible). The heat transfer of bimetallic and cast iron radiators is recalculated in a similar way.

Many well-known companies, including GLOBAL, indicate in the documentation the heat transfer of their devices for different temperature conditions (DT = 60 °C, DT = 50 °C), an example is shown in the table. If your real ΔT = 50 degrees, feel free to use the specified characteristics without any recalculation.

Useful tips

The smaller the volume of coolant in the heating system of a private house, the more efficiently the electrode-type boiler operates. Therefore, it is recommended to use bimetallic or aluminum radiators and contour wiring made of polyethylene pipes to construct the heating system.

Please note that it is best to create your own new heating for an electrode heating unit. It is not worth embedding it into an old one, where another type of heating device was used.

Thermal insulation and connection

Experts recommend thermal insulation of all circuits. The connection is best done with a separate cable from the distribution panel with the installation of a separate machine. An RCD (residual current device) cannot be installed in the electrical connection circuit.

The installation must be grounded, as is the case with other models of electric heating units.

Increasing heating efficiency

If the power of one boiler is not enough to heat a large house, then several devices can be installed in a single system. They can be connected to each other in parallel or in series.

And one last thing. Heating boilers of this type are installed only in a closed system where a circulation pump is installed. The latter provides additional coolant resistance, which affects the quality of heat generation.

Electric heater power calculation

There are two ways to calculate the power of the device.

By room area

It should be borne in mind that calculating the power of a heating unit by area gives approximate indicators and requires corrections. But it is simple and can be used for quick, approximate calculations. So, based on the established standards, for a room with one door, one window and a wall height of 2.5 meters, a power of 0.1 kW/h per 1 m2 of area is required.

For example, if we take a room with an area of 10 m2 for calculation, then the required power of the unit will be equal to 10 * 0.1 = 1 kW. But it is worth considering some factors. In the case of a corner room, the correction factor will be 1.1. The result found should be multiplied by this number. Provided that the room has good thermal insulation and has plastic (energy-saving) windows installed, the calculation result should be multiplied by 0.8.

By volume

To calculate the power of a heating convector by volume, you need:

    • calculate the volume of the room (width*length*height);
  1. the found number must be multiplied by 0.04 (exactly 0.04 kW of heat is needed to warm up 1 m3 of room);
  2. Using coefficients, clarify the result.

Due to the fact that the height of the room is also used in the calculation, the power calculation will be more accurate. For example, if the volume of the room is 30 m3 (area 10 m2, ceiling height 3 m), then 30 * 0.04 = 1.2 kW. It turns out that for this room you will need a heater with approximately a power slightly higher than that found.

For a more accurate result, power should be calculated using a coefficient. If there is more than one window in the room, then for each next one, 10% is added to the result. This figure can be reduced if the walls (floors in a private house) are well insulated.

As an additional source of heating

If the main heating is not enough during severe frosts, then an electric convector is often used as an additional source of thermal energy. The calculation, in this case, is made as follows:

    • when calculating the indicator by area, 30-50 W are required for each square meter;
  1. when calculating by volume, 0.015-0.02 kW is required per 1 m3.

For 4 people

For four people, a boiler of 100–120 liters would be optimal, for example, Timberk Flumen SWH FSM9 100 V

. Using reliable fastenings, it is installed at a height of 60 cm from the floor. This is done so that you have access to its “insides” and the opportunity to fix the problem if one is discovered.

Like other models in this series, the tank is made of stainless steel, has a 7-year warranty, and is equipped with a “dry” double heating element. The magnesium anode protects the tank from corrosion, and the Comfort mode helps reduce energy costs. It takes about 140 minutes to warm 100 liters to 30 degrees.
